Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are enthusiastic learners, facing daily hardships in their young lives. We are a Title I campus, and 97 percent of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. Hurricane Harvey disrupted our school during the 2017 - 2018 academic year, causing further hardships on our students and their families. Currently, one-fourth of my class are English as a Second Language students.
A love of reading creates life-long learners.
A student's ability to read impacts their self confidence, their current academic success, and their future. Students who are successful readers will continue to read their entire lives.
My students love to read yet most have limited, if any access to books outside of school. Therefore, it is very important to have a variety of books at their reading level in the classroom, not just in the school library. The smile on their faces when they read a book that captures their interest is priceless. My students get so excited about what they are reading that they can't wait to share it with me or their friends. Students are often waiting days to get their hands on a special book they want to read.
My Project
My students favorite time of the day is our quiet reading time. When it is time to move on to other work, many are disappointed and don't want to put their books away.
My students are so hooked on books that they lose track of time and become lost in their books.
They often ask to take books outside to recess or to be able to stay in during PE to finish a book. In addition, many are taking books home to read for the night and returning them the next day.
By having more nonfiction and fiction books available in my classroom at a variety of reading levels, students will be able to improve their reading skills and reading comprehension. This will lead to greater academic success and will also lead to greater self confidence and a brighter future.
