Hooked into Reading with Favorite Series

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you found a chapter book series that you loved? Nancy Drew? Hardy Boys? Babysitter Club? There are many amazing chapter book series to help readers get hooked into reading.

My readers are in first, second, and third grade.

These urban students come to me in small groups for reading because they need extra assistance and attention to catch up to their peers. They struggle for a variety of reasons, and my job is to diagnose, teach, and catch them up! Along with teaching invaluable reading skills, I teach a LOVE of reading to make sure that my students will become lifelong readers.

My Project

My students need copies of easy-to-read chapter books,such as Fly High, Fly Guy! and Andy Shane is NOT in Love with Abby Carter! so that they can have success in chapter books and work in small groups to learn the skills they need to read them. One way to help struggling readers catch up is to help them have successful, enjoyable experiences with real books. These chapter book series will be loved and adored and read cover to cover. The first book in the series, I will read aloud to a small group of students. For the second book in the series, the students will work with me in a small group to help them tackle the book more independently. The rest of the books in the series will be available in the classroom library for the students that love the series to continue reading independently. All students will learn the reading skills they need to tackle longer books that have less pictures. Equally as important, all of the students will find the JOY in reading.

I loved Nancy Drew as a child, and I vividly remember wanting to read every single book in the series.

This series hooked me into reading, and your donation of chapter book series for these struggling readers will hook them! We all know that in sports and in reading "practice makes perfect."
