Establishment of a crocheting group within our school library will not only enhance arts education, but also promote social and emotional learning among our students, aligning with current research findings and state standards. After learning the basics and becoming more comfortable with crocheting, this group will make items to donate to organizations such as the homeless shelter, children’s hospital, and other established organizations in need.
Arts education has been shown to have a multitude of benefits for students, including improved academic performance, enhanced creativity, and increased self-confidence.
According to a study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology by R. M. Reese in 2019, students engaged in arts-based activities demonstrated higher levels of academic motivation and engagement compared to their peers. By incorporating crocheting into our library programming, we aim to provide students with a hands-on creative outlet that complements their traditional academic pursuits while also teaching them about promoting the welfare of others through donations.
Furthermore, research in the field of social and emotional learning (SEL) indicates that participation in extracurricular activities fosters the development of crucial life skills such as empathy, teamwork, and resilience. Durlak in 2011, students who participate in SEL programs demonstrate improved social skills, fewer behavioral problems, and better academic performance.
