My resource room students are resilient, yet struggling learners. Our rural community has a very high poverty rate and many students do not have basic necessities including food, clothing, and medical care. Many of my students struggle with attention and maintaining appropriate behaviors during lessons. I try to engage students with experiential learning activities as much as possible, but there are times where they have seat work and pencil and paper tasks. I believe children do best with positive behavioral supports in place to help them learn the skills they need to succeed!
My students work so hard to behave in their classes!
But sometimes they need a little extra support to learn how to self regulate. Being a PBIS school we work hard to motivate our students and teach them the skills they need to self-regulate. I would love to provide some rewards and incentives for them to have in the classroom. I am also introducing stuffed "homework buddies" to help promote reading and math fact practice for when they are not at school. When properly motivated, children attend better to lessons, are more active listeners, and produce great work.
My students want to succeed in school but sometimes they struggle with focus and appropriate behaviors. Our school uses a positive behavior system and it really works! This project will help keep my students motivated and on task with tangible rewards. These rewards help build intrinsic motivation and better self-regulation skills that are necessary in school- and in life!
Homework Buddies help to get the tough work done!
My students struggle academically and motivation for homework after a full day at school is low. I want to use these buddies to excite children about reading at home and practicing their math facts. Having a furry friend to adopt and care for will teach the skills necessary to be independent with work outside of the classroom.
