Beginning literacy skills taught in kindergarten include letter and sound relationships. To enforce these early learning skills, I have attached adhesive letters to the vinyl floor and students learn to identify their letter location and their friends location. Unfortunately, a hard linoleum floor is not a comfortable, colorful rug to gather and hear a story or learn a new concept in math. An alphabet carpet would be an invaluable addition to our classroom. It would provide a warm, comfortable, colorful, seating arrangement and also reinforce sound/symbol relationships. It could be used to play alphabet recognition games and reinforce letters sounds. Management and classroom listening skills are easier to reinforce if everyone has their assigned seat. Visitors, parents and other teachers can refer to the wall chart to identify the names of all children that correspond to the letters and call on children by name! A classroom should be an attractive and inviting place to learn. This alphabet carpet would make a huge impact in management, ambiance and learning.
