Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an enthusiastic bunch of 10 and 11 year old students. Their ability levels vary greatly with some students reading at a 5th grade level while other students are struggling at a pre-primer level. There are 9 English language learners in the class and 6 students with individualized educational plans. This diverse class has shown respect and acceptance for one another's differences and an eagerness for learning and helping one another.
Many of my students spend their recess breaks volunteering in the special education and transitional kindergarten classrooms.
They have big hearts and want to serve others. Some students from my class took the initiative to start a garden club where they have received permission to clean garden beds with hopes of growing a variety of winter vegetables.
My Project
In my classroom there are two small rugs, however there are no other flexible seating options currently available. I've included two bean bag chairs and two portable lap desks to increase seating options. Many of my rambunctious students thrive when they can move around and fidget while they read or work in small groups. I believe these kinesthetic learners will benefit from increased seating options.
As a first year teacher, my classroom library is mostly comprised of used and dated books.
I'd love to increase my student's love of reading by bringing in popular books that they are familiar with, and most importantly, that they are excited about.
Finally, I've included a few miscellaneous items for the gardening club as well as two student engagement tools. I know the group of students who faithfully work on their garden beds would be thrilled to have some tools and seeds to grow.
