Home Sweet Classroom: Alternative Seating for Language Arts Class

Help me give my students alternative seating so they can focus better and delve into books to learn about the world around them.

My Students

Our middle school students are big-hearted, curious about the world around them, and have energy for days. Our middle school houses roughly 800 students, and these students will go on to attend a high school of over 2,200 students next year. They travel to 9 classes with various teachers and students in each class.

In such a large school system, alternative seating in language arts class allows students to cozy up and find a reading nook special just for them.

Reading provides an outlet to explore the ideas they're longing to know more about and alternative seating encourages students to utilize this healthy escape.

My Project

The thirst for a comfortable environment to read in is apparent when talking to my students. They want to sprawl out on bean bag chairs and cozy up on a couch. Alternative seating provides students itching with energy an opportunity to move. It creates a home-like environment for all students - a place where they feel like they belong. It motivates them to read, and research shows that the more students read, the stronger readers students become. The more students read means improved fluency, rate, decoding, encoding, and vocabulary.

Picture this... a student curls up with a book on the classroom couch, two students wiggle in bean bag chairs as they dive into young adult novels, and a student moves to a quiet section of the room on a bean bag to read.

There are various kids and texts scattered throughout the room. This is how I picture my classroom, an inviting space that encourages everyone to read. With your help, my students will feel comfortable in class, safe to move, and consequently become more literate citizens.
