My Students

My art classroom is the most groovy, happening place to be, made up of students who have always let their imaginations and creativity soar. We're talking the best of the best, challenge seekers and dream makers - my students have learned to embrace their inner artist-self and to keep an open-mind to a world outside of their own.

Traditionally, they come from a rather rural-low income farmland county in the heart of our rolling hills and beautiful mountain home, West Virginia.

With such a rich heritage for the arts, there could be no better place to begin their artistic path than here. With that said, it's a shame that their exposure to diversity, to culture and the world has been, for the sake of a gentler term, very limited.

And this folks, is where the art we experience in my classroom gets interesting. They're taken away from their cozy, "comfort zone" and brought to a place entirely new - and they love it! When you begin to take a closer look at what they're doing, you'll see all the subtle transformations that have and are continually taking place - both in their lives and in their art.

My Project

The resources provided through your contributions will give my art students the chance to experience the beautiful art of Mola created by the Kuni Indian's in Central Panama. After taking some time exploring the art form and talking about the cultural significance, history and processes involved, my students will be able to take what they've learned and use it to create their very own, truly one-of-a-kind Mola! Students will utilize peer collaboration, 21st century interactive engagements, critical-thinking activities and of course creative expression to accomplish their goal. Here's where we need your help!

Your donation and support will go towards the purchase of shaping scissors, glue sticks, bottles, and brushes, construction paper, paper, tag board and erasers.

These resources will go directly into the students hands and will be used to complete their beautiful and colorful artworks. Please consider helping my students experience this, perhaps, once-in-a-life time opportunity!

I want my donors to know that you aren't simply giving to my project to enrich my visual arts classroom, you're giving to it to help build confidence in my students. They deserve to believe their art matters, that to know that even though art may not be their strongest gift, they can still find enjoyment and fulfillment in it.
