I teach 9th and 11th grade at a high poverty school in Delaware. Many of my students have experienced little success in school and in response have developed a myriad of strategies for avoiding work. Reaching them poses a significant challenge under the best of circumstances, let alone during these trying time. Most of them want to do well in school, but do not want to risk further academic failure or embarrassment. Add to this students with special needs, English language learners, and those who are simply apathetic toward school and you have a recipe for widespread failure.
However, despite all of the obstacles in their way, my students know school has something to offer them and desperately want to find what it is.
My job is to facilitate my students' journey from struggling, reluctant learners to life long lovers of education.
My Project
While we now live in a world dominated by zooms and chromebooks, there is something to be said for old fashioned, pen and paper, markers and scissors, creative, hands-on work. To this end, my students show their understanding of each quarter's material by creating a dynamic, colorful poster project highlighting their independent reading book. For many students, it is the most engaging and rewarding assignment of the marking period.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond their control, a sizeable number of my students are unable to obtain materials, especially poster board, on their own.
Lack of materials should never hinder a student from completing their work. Please help my students by providing them with enough poster paper and easel paper to complete their quarterly projects for the rest of the year.
