This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school consists of over 85% free and reduced-price lunch. Our 8th grade students are a diverse group who come from a socio-economically disadvantaged area. Many of our students have not traveled outside of their own neighborhood, and much of what they learn about the areas outside their neighborhood comes from the content they access in the classroom. They are eager to learn and their love of learning is heightened when given the opportunity to access high-interest content.

Our students face great adversities, yet still come to school wanting to learn and are in desperate need of high-interest novels to quench their thirst for knowledge.

They come to school looking for an opportunity to learn even though many are performing below grade level.

My Project

I chose the book "Milkweed" by Jerry Spinelli because it is an historical fiction novel based on the Holocaust, specifically focusing on the Warsaw Ghetto. This novel ties into the WWII curriculum my students will be learning in their history classes this year, and will be a follow-up to the Holocaust memoir (Because of Romek by David Faber) we teach earlier in the year. I taught this book last year in my Language Arts classes, and my students were both captivated by the characters and horrified by the events that took place.

The students will learn the horrifying events that took place in the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII, told by an orphan boy who is trying to survive.

Students in all five of my and my partner's Language Arts classes will have access to these books and the powerful story told within.
