Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with 6 and 7 year old students who have many different needs.
My students are underprivileged children with diverse backgrounds.
About half of my students are English language learners and come from families who have several children to support at home. The levels of my students vary greatly. Some of them need a lot of support with their fine motor skills or with following simple directions. Others need extra support in basic reading, writing, and math skills. The rest are ready for a challenge and to move on to the next level. We have a wonderful campus but not enough resources to go around. Our school shares one computer lab and we have a few outdated computers in our classrooms (including the teacher laptops). In addition, our classroom furniture does not work well for several of my students who have trouble staying focused and sitting still. It is a competitive world out there and our children need access to efficient technology and comfortable seating arrangements in order to learn the skills necessary to be successful in any work environment.
My Project
Many of my students have a lot of difficulty sitting in their chairs safely and appropriately. What ends up happening is my students who have the most difficulty sitting still end up leaning back in their chairs or moving their chairs excessively causing an unsafe situation. I have had several students fall backwards or accidentallly hit someone with their chair as a result. The noise these plastic chairs make can also be very distracting to others. Hokki stools will help my student's move and wiggle as needed without falling backwards and making excessive noises. It will also help them increase their focus as well as everyone else's around them. Ideally, I would have a stability chair for every student but we have to start somewhere!
