Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from the West End of Providence, Rhode Island. We are a grade 5-8 middle school comprised of 550 students. We are located in a diverse community with low socioeconomics. Students come to this school from a variety of countries, speaking different languages but the common factor is that they are at a disadvantage financially.

Students that attend our school and join our athletic teams are proud.

They strive to be competitive with surrounding communities. They have positive attitudes and solid work ethic but are in need of materials that will prepare them to be able to compete against communities with greater socioeconomic status.

At our school we encourage students of all abilities to participate in athletic programs for a myriad of reasons, including the importance of living a fit and healthy lifestyle.

My Project

Donations for this project will help prepare our student athletes to be competitive. At this time we do not have the proper equipment to train our track team.

For example, students have never been exposed to track and field events like the hurdles or Javelin Throw.

Having practice equipment would afford students the opportunity to try new events and to prepare them to compete in upcoming meets. It would start the path to putting them on equal ground as their peers who are afforded the opportunity.

Our overall goal is to expose students to the various events, give them opportunity to train properly while emphasizing the importance of being part of a team and living a healthy lifestyle. The donations will be an important part of helping our students uncover their talents which will encourage them to continue running throughout high school and beyond.

Materials needed and how we will use them:

* Weights to help strength and condition the students for throwing events.

* Javelin -practice for that event

* Indoor shots- practice for shot put event

* Men's and Women's shorts- for the students who do not have shorts of their own.

*Running Batons- to practice for the relay event.

*Duffle Bag- to store equipment and materials for meets.

*Stop Watch- to time running events.

*Yoga mats- to help stretch students out between events.

*Hurdles - to practice for the hurdle event.
