My Students

Night and day. That's how clear-cut the divide is in the socioeconomic status within my classroom. In this small, rural town my students struggle with academic gaps created by inconsistent education resulting from the pandemic and increased focus on scripted intervention plans that prioritize the basic building blocks of core subjects and reduce opportunities for creative learning.

However, these students are so resilient and kind, so willing to try anything that being able to teach them to use educational technology with intentionality and specificity - going beyond word processing and social media - including that technology can be used for social good, will further open up a world of possibilities for these learners.

Despite everything they have been through over the previous two years - with the pandemic and even before - these learners remain, at their core, creative and passionate about everything they do.

My Project

Students will use these Makey-Makey kits to practice their coding skills as they create talking posters and presentations in Social Studies and other subjects throughout the second semester. At the end of each year, sixth graders hold an Ancient World fair to demonstrate their learning of ancient world cultures. Each pair or group of students must create several life-sized artifacts and a trifold display board.

The goal is for students to develop enough coding skills to have their end-of year Ancient World Fair trifold display be a press-to-hear display while students are managing their artifacts for visitors to the "museum".

These Makey-Makey boards provide technology with specificity and purpose to help students be interested in the project, delighted in the outcome, and learn a valuable skill that they can use in other areas of life.
