Sixth grade students in my reading, language arts, and social studies classes arrive eager to learn, curious about everything, and trepidatious about middle school. As the only school in town, the K - 8 building is familiar to them, but the leap to sixth grade feels like they've crossed through the looking glass and into Wonderland. The need to provide students with both a well-developed and easy to navigate classroom library becomes essential at this grade level as they move from being able to count on weekly access to the school library at a precise time on a particular day to only having media for one single quarter of the school year. My classroom library becomes the easiest source of quality reading material, offering many series and additional novels that appeal to sixth grade reading desires and abilities. My students feel at home in class, on their way to becoming lifelong learners and readers.
