History in 3-D! (Without the Funky Glasses)

My students need clay, paints, felt, tissue paper, mosaic tiles and other art supplies to create 3-dimensional models and maps.

My Students

Extra, extra! Read all about it! History comes to life in NYC high school!

Okay, so maybe it won't make the special edition of the afternoon papers, but turning history into something fun, exciting, and hands-on IS news for students who have only studied history as words on a page, pictures of old white guys in funny clothes, and boring "drill and kill" test prep for the state exam.

I teach high school history at a school for new immigrants. Our students come from more than 15 countries and speak many languages, but all of them are learning English and earning an American high school diploma at our school. We're one of few public schools in the country that serve only ESL students in a multi-ethnic learning community. Our students still have to do everything English-speaking students have to do -- including pass those state tests -- but they have to do it all while learning English too.

My Project

That's where you come in. By making a donation to this project, you'll be supplying our classroom with a wide range of art supplies to be used in class projects that will explain complicated historical processes and events in 3-D. Reading about the Silk Road is one thing, but building a 3-D map of the Silk Road, complete with clay camels laden with paper, silks, and spices, is another. That was one example of a project we did this year, and all of my students -- regardless of their levels of English -- were able to understand issues related to this trade route. We also made clay models of new technologies developed during World War I and masks to represent important historical figures. My students love these projects, but we've really depleted our supplies this year. Won't you help us by buying us new supplies?

With your donation, you'll not only be buying art supplies.

You'll be buying an educational experience that will be enriching and rewarding for my students. You'll also be investing in their academic success, because the more they understand in class, the better they'll do on the state exam. And who knows? When my students all do well on those challenging standardized tests, maybe it will make the evening edition after all.
