My Students

My students are the best students in the world. I love these kids. They are the most mature, generous middle school students I've ever met. We recently suffered serious damage from Hurricane Irma, and if you had seen them volunteering in their community - passing out water and supplies, cleaning up yards, hauling tree limbs, etc.,- you'd know what I mean. Despite having no water or electricity themselves, they were out helping their communities with determination and an impressive work ethic.

We are in a rural, low income area, with a sizable ELA /migrant population, and many of the challenges that come from being in a small, agricultural town.

Despite this (and often because of it), our middle school is full of wonderful, determined, kind, generous kids from diverse backgrounds.

My Project

Due to budget shortfalls, we already had no library at our school. But because of Hurricane Irma, even the few bookshelves we'd had are now gone. As Civics and US History teachers, we are constantly seeking ways to make our content more appealing, more relevant, and less intimidating.

We want a classroom library that engages ALL of our students - no matter how insecure they are regarding their reading level; and we want to offer options for students who may feel our history doesn't include or relate to them in a meaningful way.

I've also found that my students love having their picture taken with the new books. The last time we received a delivery of books from Donors Choose, one student asked to take her picture with the book she was checking out, and several more then decided they wanted to check out books as well. I want to mount a wire hanging rack on my wall and clip pictures of the students with the books they are checking out. Having engaging and kid friendly books is step 1, but I also want to foster an environment where it is cool to be reading.
