History Comes Alive Through the Story of Harriet Tubman
My students need 32 copies of the biography of Harriet Tubman to gain a greater understanding of the history of America and be mentored by a real hero through her amazing true story.
In a world where the heroes students often encounter are less that noble, the story of Harriet Tubman brings to life a true American hero who led selflessly and honorably. Her life provides an example worth following, and she is a hero who can challenge and inspire my students.
Being in 4th grade can be challenging.
My students are beginning to think on their own, develop personal goals, responsibilities and opinions. They are a group of strong readers, and they devour books almost as fast as I can supply them. They also fall in love with the characters in their books. From Harry Potter, Percy Jackson to Nancy Drew - these fictional individuals have a great impact on the lives of my students.
My Project
My students need 32 copies of the biography of Harriet Tubman to gain a greater understanding of the history of America and be mentored by a real hero through her amazing true story. The biographical story of Harriet Tubman provides my students with the opportunity to come face to face with a true hero. Her personal experiences required great sacrifice, courage and strength. As we study this novel as a class, we will have limitless opportunities to discuss and apply her character traits to our lives. Additionally, we will use this story as a launching activity for a service project for our community. Just as Harriet Tubman gave of herself, we will find a way to give of ourselves. I am not sure how the students will choose to serve... I will have to wait and see how they are inspired by Harriet Tubman to do something great for those in need. I can't wait to see what my fourth graders come up with!
The reading of this novel will not only improve my student's reading skills and teach them about America's history, but it will challenge them to look inside themselves and consider how they can impact the world around them.
Harriet Tubman - a real life hero who not only lead over 300 slaves to freedom, but one who continues to inspire and challenge to this day. I can't wait for my students to meet her!
