History by Comics

Help me give my students a historical library that is more appropriate for their grade level.

My Students

My students are in a Title I Philadelphia public school. I teach 7th and 8th grade Geography, Civics, and American History. I would like to engage my students through more modern literacy approaches so as to establish more student interest in history. I include more hands-on projects and interactive classroom stations as well as engaging supplemental reading including history comics.

I am creating a more modern classroom library so that my students will enjoy engaging reading experiences that include many different topics and reading mediums.

Students will enjoy independent reading as well as group reading and discussions related to the history of the United States, women in history, Black Americans in history, biographies, mythology, and past and current event novel series chapter books.

I want my students to have space to make hands-on history art projects to reinforce their learning experience and give a tangible focus for the lessons. Through these reflective and hands-on projects, I hope to make American history geographical education more tangible for my PBL students.

Students always learn better when they can relate to the subject and have something tangible to see and do.

My Project

My students may struggle to read and, therefore, may have difficulty keeping up with students who are reading at grade level. This book selection includes comics and other reading mediums that are easier to read. These texts are mature enough to keep their interest and are content appropriate for grade level achievement.

It is challenging to find books that are appropriately challenging for readers who are not at grade level but mature enough to keep their interest.

This selection of chapter books will encourage readers of all levels to pursue historical knowledge in social studies class. Comics and other books with more infographics make it much easier for a reading-challenged student to become engaged.
