Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

BTWSHS, located in Miami, Florida, has a rich and significant history as the first public high school for African Americans in South Florida. Established in 1926, it initially served students from as far as Palm Beach County and Key West. The school's construction was delayed due to bombings, and it officially opened in 1927. In 1967, it was converted to a middle school to facilitate desegregation efforts, but was later re-established as a senior high school in 1999. After transitioning from an elementary school teacher to a high school teacher, I realized that students' passion for reading at our school became desolate as the expectations of high school increased.

It is time to return to the way things used to be, where reading was the foundation for knowledge and skill acquisition especially for students of varying backgrounds.

To achieve this, I want to create a print rich environment with inspirational tapestries that will encourage and enhance students' love for reading. One of the first steps I plan to take is to transform our high school's literacy hall into an appealing and inspiring space. Most of our Reading, English Language Arts (ELA), and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses are taught on the second floor of our Historic Senior High School. I aim to use these inspiring tapestry wall hangings to make this second floor a place where the magic of learning and reading happens not only in the hearts of our students but also in their minds.
