My students need an Elmo document camera to follow their high school civics lessons as it is projected on a screen.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is falling apart! I have 6 windows in my classroom 2 of which have had the shades fall down on students, both have not been fixed yet. My community is poor, inner city where 98% of the students live below the poverty line and receive free or reduced lunch. I often think some come to school for the routine structure and the food.
Students face the fact that they have below average reading and writing skills so the tasks I ask them to do sometimes are hard. When they take standardized tests in state and the SAT they struggle. When they struggle this hurts their college chances.
I often ask students to follow along while we read and some do and some don't. I like to write sample answers and sample papers for them and with a document camera they would all be able to see the work on the big screen instead of the TV monitor I currently use attached to my computer.
The goal of my civics class is to understand and appreciate our history by reading historical documents.
If they had this document camera I could display the historical documents we look at like the declaration and the constitution and I could mark them up and display them so they could all see. Students have a hard time synthesizing the text and if I was able to model how I break down the text by underlining and marking the text they would get the scaffolding they need to do it on their own.
Your help will make it possible to develop the basic skills they need and to be comfortable with technology to succeed and graduate college ready.
