Hispanic Gorditas, a Hispanic and Chemistry Inspiration

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 9- 12 graders Spanish 2, 3, 4 and 5. My students love learning and being engaged. They are tremendously well-rounded individuals who enjoy learning about various communities and cultures. They are very hands-on and enjoy learning new things enthusiastically.
My students are very inquisitive and have a growth mindset.
The students are of varying abilities and would benefit from all the educational opportunities available. My students are fascinated by learning a new language and very much enjoy learning about the differences between Spanish and English. They look forward to increasing their knowledge of the Spanish language and applying what they are learning to the real world.
My Project
Many of my students think the burritos and tacos from Taco Bell are authentic and Mexican and grave learning more about the Hispanic Culture. The students always say they would like to create a hands on project they enjoy. The Hispanic Gorditas will allow my students the opportunity to experience Culture and Chemistry through cooking. We will discuss the way the metric system works in various countries. We will also review the difference between Fahrenheit and celsius.
Students will have the opportunity to convert measures between the metric and imperial systems through cooking.
They will deepen their knowledge about the metric system and practice making conversions of mass and volume with liquids and solids.
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the metric system and have an opportunity to present a hypothesis by researching various recipes for Hispanic Sweet Gorditas. The students will deepen their understanding of chemical reactions and the effect of various procedures that impact the end result.
