I teach high school students in grades 9 through 12 in a high poverty school. We are located in a family tourist area with an ever-changing transient population which serves many special education and non-English speaking students.

Traditionally, use of Dr. Seuss books in the classroom can be limited to lesson plans for pre-K and elementary grade students. The books have been used as tools for teaching tolerance, government, ethics, phonics, and vocabulary. However, there is a place for Dr. Seuss books in the high school classroom.

The graphics, language, vocabulary, and stories in Dr. Seuss create excitement for students and adults of all ages. A classroom set of Dr. Seuss books will connect to all students including those who are low level readers and/or non-English speaking. My desktop publishing students will using the books as the basis for creating flyers, tri-fold brochures, posters, and billboards. The illustrations will be used to launch a unit on graphic design, book design, and publishing. My business students will collaborate with a special education class to create talking books for handicapped students. They will also catalog the books and create presentations. My web design students will use the books to create a fan page, research Dr. Seuss, and publish web articles, and a classroom blog and wiki. For those students familiar with Dr. Seuss, they will reconnect with the much loved books of their childhood. For non-English speaking students and other students unfamiliar with Dr. Seuss, they will begin a love of literature that will last them a lifetime. The uses of the books in a high school classroom are unlimited.

A donation to this project will extend literacy in a fun and creative way. Business curriculum will be linked to childhood books and used in a variety of ways to generate student excitement. Students will create many projects and products and be actively engaged in the learning process.
