High School Physical Scientists Calculate STEAM Into Curriculum
Help me give my students calculators, digital scales, beakers, headphones, and thermometers. These items are necessary for success in my Physical Science classroom.
Too often people do not feel science is useful and they don't want to apply themselves, or they too quickly give up on topics they don't understand. Some of my students may feel the same way, but when they have the "aha moment" and the subject matter clicks, the look of achievement and pride on their faces makes it all worth it.
My students live and study in an urban portion of Miami-Dade county that sees an unnecessary amount of violence; but through it all, they strive to learn more about the inorganic world around them.
My students attend a Title I school which means 75% or more are on free or reduced lunch. They come into my Physical Science class to learn about Physics, and Chemistry and their ability to persist never ceases to amaze me.
My Project
The resources in this project will benefit my Physical Scientists immensely. I am constantly needing to print out something to put into our Interactive Physical Science Notebooks (IPN). These notebooks allow students to process and organize their thinking, which in turn, builds structure, organize their thoughts, and impact the various modalities. The IPNs also provide an opportunity for students to engage with each other by sharing what they know and how they process what they've learned.
Donating to this project will help keep the focus of science learning on science.
The 20 calculators will allow students to focus on calculating the various formulas, instead of them being distracted by the calculators on their phones. We recently adopted a new science book, that is completely online. The headphones will give my students, who are sensitive to sensory stimuli the opportunity to focus on the Techbook instead of the rest of the students.
In science, sharing material among several students is not only inconvenient, but at times can lead to inaccurate results and measurements. The digital scales, thermometers, and beakers will allow each of my groups to their own set of materials thatn they don't have to share.
