This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from the Far Rockaway Beach area in NYC. Many of the Artist-Scholars I work with have learning disabilities and social emotional disabilities. Many students travel to school from low-income areas; they do not have access to a personal reading library at home. I work closely with amazing 9th-12th graders as the Special Education teacher. I work with grades 9-10 in English-Language arts, I teach remedial reading grades 9-12. I also host as 12th grade ensemble (advisory) class daily.
My Artist-Scholars love engaging in interesting literature about social issues in America, fantasy books that take them to a new place, non-fiction self help books, and stories of hope, love and overcoming adversity.
The students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. As special education learners, books are so important to my students and are truly valued. Books are essential in increasing knowledge, Lexile Levels and becoming college ready. My class library is an essential resource for my students. Many of my students rely on our school library to check out high-quality books and dive into a new world, not available to them at home.
My Project
Please help fund my High-School ELA classroom library. My Artist-Scholars will have access to interesting, new and exciting books for leisure and classwork that will encourage and foster reading. It's proven that student's who have access to books will exceed and excel in their post-secondary college careers. My students will be using these books to complete writing assignments with various topics like text analysis, compare and contrast, narrative, persuasive, expository, argumentative essay's. My Artist-Scholars will be able to "check out" books from the classroom library for reading for pleasure as well.
Some themes of the library will focus around teen-self help, fantasy, fiction, non-fiction, young adult themes, mystery, social-emotional learning, and equity & justice.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
