Help me give my students the resources needed to help them achieve SMART goals in all classes. Additionally, the bookshelves and bean bag will add to the welcoming classroom setting for students in need of other support.
As the only Interventionist in the building, I support students in grades 9-12 in all subject areas. My focus is on freshmen in need of basic skills support in algebra and English. The calculators and chargers will help students be prepared for our sessions. The bookshelves will allow me to showcase an extensive, diverse classroom library to hopefully encourage independent reading, which has been a school wide initiative. By identifying freshmen when they first enter high school, I can help these students build a strong foundation of skills. This will bring them success throughout their high school careers and beyond. Additionally, I spend a lot of time with seniors to create Graduation Success Plans that help struggling students stay on track for their anticipated graduation dates.
I also serve as the Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) coordinator, supporting students in need of educational, emotional and/or behavioral support.
Since some of these needs span beyond academics, my classroom often serves as a safe space for children who struggle with their mental health. When students are in need of a break due to anxiety or other diagnoses, they are able to come into my room for support. I currently have an area of my classroom dedicated to quiet breaks. The bean bag will be added to this area.
My position has come with many challenges, but also some of the sweetest successes. Oftentimes, the students in need of additional support demonstrate negative behaviors, resulting in conduct issues. By developing relationships with these students, I have been able to better understand their needs and communicate them with staff, so that the entire staff is providing the necessary supports and interventions.
