My students have learned about the Rubik's Cube; Herd Immunity and Vaccines; the Patterns of the Moon, Sun, and Earth; the Coronavirus; the Health Benefits of Crying; Unemployment Rates; Mars and the Perseverance Rover; and Whales, Bats, Elephants, and other animals.
Every day, they show up willing and ready to learn.
All of my students speak English as their Second Language. This past year unimaginably challenged them, and yet they continue to show up and learn while I guide them.
My Project
These books will be used to teach students the joys of reading, the power of stories, and other foundational reading skills (such as how to ask and answer questions while reading; how to read in a way that expresses the meaning of the text; how to retell and summarize a given story).
We will also use these books to study the structure of stories and the qualities of good writing (also known as using mentor texts).
We will learn to read these books as writers by looking at the "writers' moves" (i.e. how they engage the reader with the beginning of the story; how they reflect on why their story mattered at the end of the story; how they use sensory language to create images in their readers' mind).
