How do I begin! This year's Beginning of the Year is like no other experience in my 7 years of teaching. It is challenging, mysterious, and exciting at the same time. The best part is my kiddos!
The majority of my students come from Spanish speaking homes and are often first-generation Americans.
They are members of a Title 1 District comprised of a student population with 97% free or reduced-price lunch recipients. Their community at large is small and made of many migrant families. 98% of my students are English Language Learners with great potential to succeed given adequate resources.
These circumstances do not deter their desire to know MORE and engage thoughtfully in their academics. COVID-19 and Distance Learning have amplified the glaring socioeconomic differences between our students and have only increased students' learning gaps amongst their peers. Our school district was able to successfully provide internet access and laptops for all students, but as you can imagine, much more support is needed.
During a global pandemic and national racial tension, our students remain the most vulnerable population yet. Their ability to continue their education while remaining civically informed as been challenged at every angle.
In my student's community, they do not have many opportunities outside of school to discuss how they feel about fitting into a diverse American society, and this has become increasingly difficult during Distance Learning.
Access to current events and other fictional topics are scarce as well.
In order for the next generation to successfully impact change, they must be informed early on. TIMES for Kids is an excellent way to achieve this, and they have seamlessly made all of their magazines available digitally to fit and Distance Learning platform. With regularly published student issues equipped with teacher lessons, students will consistently remain engaged with current events and be provided ample opportunities to study and discuss issues and events happening across the globe.
In addition to a need for materials, students need access to high-quality instruction. My district was able to close the digital divide for our low-income community, however, teachers still struggle with the means for delivery. The state of California issued a 15% budget cut to Public Education which resulted in a $5million cut to my district alone. I am overjoyed that our district prioritized remaining funding for salaries, avoiding layoffs, and students' access to the internet and devices.
This has led many teachers to purchase personal iPads and/or monitors, cables, and additional tech tools to enhance the way we deliver our online lessons. Supporting this project fully will help alleviate the personal cost incurred in hopes to deliver the highest quality instruction to my students.
