High-Interest Texts for Soaring Readers

Help me give my students high-interest books to support their development as readers.

My Students

Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.

At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.

Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.

I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.

My Project

My students love reading! It doesn't matter the genre or the series; if it's a book, they want it. Now that I am teaching third grade, I need to expand my classroom library to include more texts that cater to the needs and interests of advanced readers. So, I took a poll in my class to see the types of books that they wanted.

My students self-selected high-interest series that they would like to see in our classroom library.

These series include Dog Man and Captain Underpants!

We will use these books for many purposes. We will primarily use these texts for book clubs. Students will be able to check out these books and answer comprehension questions. We will then discuss the book together so I can help students improve their analytical skills. As well, students will also be able to use the books for independent reading so they can develop their love for literacy.

I want to show my students that their choices and opinions are important when it comes to choosing the literature we have in our classroom. Please help out our class!
