High Interest Science for All!

Help me give my students soap base, essential oils and soy wax to practice funtional Chemistry skills for hands-on, high interest projects to teach complex scientific concepts to students with disabilities.

My Project

These lab supplies will help my students learn complex chemistry ideas through high-interest, hand-ons activities that will allow my students to understand concepts that would otherwise be out of their grasp. My students will do a detailed research project on chemicals in the products they use on a daily basis. The culminating lab will require them to create the same products without the harmful Ingredients.

Learning differences are celebrated in my classroom.

Students with disabilities require an innovative approach to bridge the learning gaps. This includes writing out-of-the-box lessons to target unit standards that their non-disables peers are tackling. Keeping this in mind, I have created the entire unit related to solubility laws around everyday use items. This will make these concepts very concrete and manageable for my students. The goal is to allow learning through all modalities.

My students gain confidence and feel accomplished when they are able to discuss the same concepts with students in general education classes. My students are learning in a separate special education classroom. Many of my students read below a 2nd grade level where conventional methods of teaching 10th grade Chemistry only causes failure and frustration. Allowing students to experiment and create in a fun learning environment results in learning that is not easily forgotten. It also brings difficult concepts within reach. Not to forget, that as an added bonus, the students are able to take high quality products home with them.
