High Interest Reading Material - Looking For Alaska

My students need access to high interest reading material. "Looking For Alaska," by John Green, is a great title and an excellent follow-up to "Catcher in the Rye." They need 40 copies.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hungry for books - especially high interest texts that they can relate to. "Looking for Alaska" by John Green is just such a book. This award-winning coming of age novel for young adult readers will make the perfect follow-up to our reading of "Catcher in the Rye."

My students attend a unique school - a public arts-oriented high school in an historically disadvantaged inner-city area in Southern California.

Most students come from the surrounding neighborhood, making us an at-risk, Title I school (i.e. majority high poverty). At our school, we are collectively committed to the idea that art in education enhances academic achievement and personal growth.

My Project

The main issue holding many students back in their English/Language Arts classes is that they don't read enough. Over and over I've seen that students who do well in their English and other classes are those who read for pleasure. Too often, students miss out on the joy of discovery and exploration that goes along with reading a good book, primarily because they haven't found high-interest novels that they can relate to. My students need access to such books, and "Looking for Alaska" by John Green is a great fit. The book is a perfect follow-up to our reading of "Catcher in the Rye" and will provide an excellent opportunity for a comparative analysis of the two novels.

Students who read for pleasure are more well-rounded and do better in all of their academic classes.

Great books can light a fire in the hearts and minds of students. Please help foster a joy of reading among my students by donating to this project!
