My students need relatable novels for book clubs and read alouds.

My Students

"Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world." (Malala Yousafzai)

My students are anthropologists and authors, geologists and seismologists, citizens and leaders, biologists and ecologists, entrepreneurs and economists, and electricians & engineers.

I teach 4th graders in a culturally and linguistically diverse neighborhood in the Puget Sound region. Some of my students read, write, and calculate above grade level, while others are impacted by trauma and poverty or are in school for the very first time. 92% are bilingual or on their way to becoming so. They are building their future and navigating a unique set of strengths and challenges with a "practice makes progress" mindset.

My Project

"We read to know we're not alone." (William Nicholson)

Sharing quality literature in a classroom community is a powerful way to foster a life-long love of reading.

For this project, I've chosen read-aloud and book club novels that will connect my students to relatable characters and to one another.

Students will enjoy some of the stories in book clubs based on interest and/or reading level; these books include The Red Pencil, Return to Sender, The Other Side of Truth, and Inside Out and Back Again. Others will be enjoyed by all students as read-aloud connected to our units of study. Students will learn about history, ingenuity, and activism through books like The Watsons Go To Birmingham, Our Only May Amelia, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, Iqbal, and A Long Walk to Water.
