Roughly 20% of the population is dyslexic. Neuroscience now proves that these students process the English language differently. More and more states are making it a law that screening tests be given to identify students with dyslexia and making it a law that identified students be provided with the research proven reading teaching methodologies. Minnesota is one of those states.
I am a reading intervention teacher in Saint Paul, MN.
I am working to create a school wide system to provide all dyslexic students in our building with the research proven reading instruction that they deserve.
My Project
Students with dyslexia must be systematically taught the phonetic code, the six syllable types, and other structures of the English language. As they are learning, they need high interest books that use words that only contain the phonemes they have been taught.
Reading high interest books that use only the phonemes they have been taught, helps dyslexic students become fluent readers.
I ordered 4 copies of each book so I can create two phonetically controlled libraries for both our first and second grade teams. If there is any way to order from other companies, there are some wonderful phonetically controlled chapter books from High Noon publications for our older dyslexic readers.
