I’m a fourth grade learning support teacher and I work with students who have qualified for special education services. I work with many students with different needs, disabilities and interests. Most of my students are reading 1-2 grade levels below where typical fourth graders. Their interests vary as much as their abilities. Our community is very diverse. I would love to expand my classroom library with high interest low readability options for my students to practice their reading skills on their instructional level, while still being entertained. For my lower level readers, it’s very important that they aren’t reading ‘baby books’. I’m hoping by providing more options, my students will read more, improve their skills and perhaps learn to enjoy themselves getting lost in a good book. I would appreciate any help to help fund this project and would like to thank any donors in advance for their generosity in helping students who struggle with reading.
My Project
Independent practice is one of the most important things students can do to improve their reading skills. As a learning support teacher, I work with students who have special needs and often struggle to find material that they will actually enjoy reading. My hope is by adding more appealing options, my students will have the opportunity to practice their reading in a way that doesn’t feel like more ‘work’ and perhaps even enjoy it! My hope is to motivate my students to want to practice their reading skills! I thank you in advance for your consideration in donating to my project!
