Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are eager to practice their decoding skills by choosing books that interest them. I work with struggling readers in elementary grades, and having books that they actually want to read has a real impact on the amount of time they spend practicing the skills and strategies I teach them. Having a classroom library that has ample choice will help students strengthen their reading skills by offering them a variety of books to select from. The books center and book bins will allow me to organize the library to make it easily accessible for my students.

My students have many interests, so having both fiction and nonfiction books at a variety of reading levels will allow students to self-select by topic of interest.

For students working on early foundational reading skills, books with rhyming patterns like the Dr. Suess books will help them apply taught skills. While other students are curious about plants and animals, so having nonfiction books will help stimulate their interests.

My goal is to create a classroom library where students can self-select books that they're eager to read. My students are typically behind their peers when it comes to reading books on their grade level, so creating this secondary library filled with books at their level and interest will motivate them to read for pleasure while applying their decoding skills.
