Mr. March from Anchorage AK is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students a classroom library of high-interest award-winning YA novels.
My students have great values and are great kids. They struggle with reading which means they struggle with school, but they have a strong drive to grow and get better. Many of my students are from low-income housing and have book-deficits in their house. Connecting a kid up to a book that they love, and building within them a love for reading is an almost indescribable feeling. Watching my students as they see their own culture, and their own family stories being told in the stories that they have selected drives home the importance of literacy for them. I am fortunate enough to build these wonderful relationships with them founded on literacy.
Giving students opportunities to self-select and read engaging books that connect to them has been proven effective for helping to build literacy skills (Krashen, 2011)
My goal is to create a classroom library filled with high interest YA books that my students can check out for sustained silent reading as part of my curriculum.
Genres chosen range from social issues, teen non-fiction, to science fiction and fantasy, but all are award winning well-reviewed books that students will love to read.
Some books include March, After Tupac & D. Foster, The Hate U Give, The Son is Also a Star, Red Queen, Pashmina, Ms. Marvel Vol. 1 and Dear Martin.
