This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, but come to school every day ready to grow. At my school, children learn through hands-on exploration and cross-curricular instruction, supported by a STEAM focused curriculum.
“What,” “why,” "when," and “how” are words that are embraced and encouraged in my classroom.
Students are agents of their own learning and given the space to investigate their interests. My classroom is a place for students to grow, imagine, and thrive, all through learning.
My Project
Students at The Biome School thrive on asking questions. This project will provide students with access to more books that are diverse focused on STEAM content. Everyone knows that it is much easier to read a book if you are interested in the topic and it easier to connect with a character that looks like you, which is why I selected books that target topics my first graders are already asking me about and represent my student population.
Our school-wide goal for our students is to increase every child's reading score on the STAR Reading test by a minimum of 40 points.
This year my students grew an average of 75 points on their assessment. I would love to keep the momentum going for next year by increasing the number of high quality and diverse read aloud books in my collection.
