This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are eager and inquisitive, and, like all middle school students, they love to use their imaginations. They love to read, but many come from homes where books are not available, and going to the public library is not an option. Many of my students are in charge of helping their younger siblings with their education.
Libraries are supposed to be the heart of the school, and we need open-heart surgery!
Our media center is outdated, and we need to transform it into a space where students and teachers are excited to come, collaborate, and learn!
I am the media coordinator in a Title I school. When COVID-19 shut down all the school and public libraries, many of my students were left without anything to read. Now that we are reopened, these children are starved for books!
My Project
My students are crazy about graphic novels! Many of my students will grab a novel or a nonfiction book to check out too, but the manga and graphic novels are what keeps them coming into the library every day.
Reluctant readers are just readers who have not found the right book yet!
When teachers bring their classes into the media center to check out books, many of the students declare that they don't like to read... until they see the shelves of graphic novels an manga. With students coming in every day, I need help filling the bookcases!
