My Project

As the librarian for my school district, I split my time between the elementary and high schools here. Part of my job as the elementary school librarian is to facilitate independent reading time, and I'm currently trying to expand the number of chapter books available to my students for this activity. So far this year, my 3rd grade students have absolutely loved reading My Weird School together as a class— the scene where Mr. Klutz lets all the students come up and rub his bald head was met with screeching, raucous, precious laughter— and I would like to provide them multiple copies of the next few books in the series so that they can read them either alone at their own pace or together, in groups of four to five. The copies of Jason Reynolds's acclaimed "Track" series will be used in a similar way, but with my older students (5th and 6th grade).

Having multiple copies of these serial books will allow students both to read and engage with high-interest stories on their own terms, and to practice their reading fluency in group reading.

It will also give me an opportunity to work more and different reading strategies into my library instruction, as students will be able to hold their own versions of a text in their hands and react to it more closely. I am very excited about the prospect of giving students more opportunities to take reading into their own hands with multiple copies of these popular books.
