My Project

My students are curious, hardworking, and full of questions about the world around them. To fuel that curiosity, I am requesting class sets of *Long Way Down* by Jason Reynolds and *The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks* by Rebecca Skloot. These powerful texts will not only help students improve their reading and critical thinking skills, but also spark deep conversations about identity, ethics, justice, and science.

**The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks directly aligns with our school’s Health and Life Sciences Academy**, providing a real-world connection between literature, medical ethics, and biology.

Meanwhile, *Long Way Down* offers a poetic exploration of grief and choices, resonating with students’ lived experiences, while allowing them to explore figurative language and poetry in motion. These books will help students build empathy, develop cross-curricular connections, and engage meaningfully with complex issues.

My students come from diverse backgrounds and bring unique perspectives to the classroom. They are eager to learn and thrive when given access to relevant, challenging texts. This project gives them the opportunity to grow as readers, thinkers, and future leaders in both STEM and humanities fields.
