I work in the library of a very diverse middle school. My students range in age from 10-14 and they like a wide variety of literature from anime and manga to scary short stories, fantasy novels, and books about WWII. While their reading tastes vary greatly they share a love of a warm comfortable space to read and work in.
They also have a variety of learning styles, and they need more flexible learning stations.
My old fashioned library is filled with square tables and sled chairs. There is nothing wrong with them, but my students like to switch it up some, and I want to help them by giving them seating choices!
Today's Media Center space is all about flexibility and meeting the diverse needs of our students. Some kids like to sit up straight at square tables like their parents did. But many kids need something else. They need to move or stand. They need to fidget or flop.
But some kids need a different perspective whether it's sitting on the floor, or up in a tall stool at a tall table.
Think about your own seating preferences, we all have them!
Eventually I want to have complete flexible seating around the whole library but it's one step at time for now.
