The donation has allowed us to expand our hydroponics program so that more students can actively participate in the lab rather than having to share limited equipment. We have also been able to replace broken and worn equipment, which has made our lab safer, more efficient, and much more engaging for students.\r\n\r\nOne project that has been especially meaningful is having students work together to plant and monitor crops from seed to harvest. Students are responsible for checking water levels, monitoring plant growth, observing root development, and recording their findings. They are able to apply concepts from science, agriculture, and environmental sustainability in a hands-on way. Seeing students become excited about checking their plants each day and comparing their growth has been one of the highlights of the program.\r\n\r\nThe students were incredibly excited when they first saw the new materials. Many immediately began asking questions about what they would be able to grow and when they could start using the equipment. Students who had previously struggled to find a way to participate because of limited equipment were especially excited to have more opportunities to get hands-on experience.\r\n\r\nThere was a real sense of excitement and curiosity in the room. The donation helped students see that their classroom lab is a place where they can experiment, make observations, solve problems, and actually grow something of their own. We are currently working on color theory in class. They were able to learn how to mix their primary and secondary colors to make tertiary colors. Through this novel, students developed important literacy skills such as reading comprehension, vocabulary development, identifying theme, and using context clues to make meaning. While social studies often focuses on learning historical context, this year we intentionally incorporated literacy by selecting a novel that aligned with the historical time period we were studying and connected to a novel students were reading in their ELA class. This helped students deepen their understanding across subjects. \r\nReading in my classroom takes many forms. I read aloud to model fluency and comprehension strategies, students read together to support one another, and they also read independently to build reading stamina and confidence. This balanced approach allowed all learners to engage with the text at their own level.\r\nOverall, the majority of students enjoyed the novel-even reluctant readers. Students were introduced to key literacy skills such as interpreting poetry, analyzing theme, and participating in thoughtful discussions about theme, meaning, and author's purpose. Poetry is a genre many of my students typically dread, but these poems were engaging and accessible, which helped changed their mindset and build confidence. \r\nReading in my class looks collaborative and student-centered. Sometimes we read poems together as a whole class, and other times students work in table groups to discuss language, imagery, and themes before sharing their ideas. These conversations were rich and meaningful, allowing student to learn from one another as well as from the text.\r\nMany students especially enjoyed the new books, particularly my Black students, who felt a strong connection to the voices, experiences, and themes represented in the poems.
