Hide and Seek. I Need a Sensory Break!

My students need a tent, pillows and a rug.

My Students

Sensory overload occurs when one or more of the body's senses experiences over-stimulation from the environment. Imagine having to deal with this every day, all day long. Children with autism experience this all the time.

As a teacher of students with autism, I need to find ways to reach my students.

With 6 students in my class, that usually means 6 different ways to teach the same concept. My six middle school students with autism face many daily challenges none of us could ever imagine. They attend a specialized school in a high poverty neighborhood in NYC. My class is specifically designed to meet the sensory, learning, and medical needs of students with autism that cannot be met in a traditional classroom. They all have limited social skills as well as significant language deficits in both expressive and receptive language. The majority are nonverbal and communicate by alternate modes.

My Project

My students are usually on sensory overload all day long. If they are not calm it interferes with their instruction. They need a calming space within the classroom that they can go to help soothe, regulate their emotions and calm their senses. Once they are calm, they will be ready to come back to the group and resume instruction. The materials I am requesting will be used to set up a sensory corner in our classroom that the children can go to to take a break when needed. The tent will allow the children to feel safe within a small space. The pillows and rug will allow them a clean environment to lie down on.

By supporting this project you will be helping my students learn to self regulate their emotions and sensory needs.

This will assist them in becoming more aware of their bodies and what choices they can make when it comes to regulating their own emotions.
