My six middle school students with autism face many daily challenges none of us could imagine. They attend a specialized school in a high poverty neighborhood in NYC. My class is specifically designed to meet the sensory, learning, and medical needs of students with autism that cannot be met in a traditional classroom. They all have limited social skills as well as significant language deficits in both expressive and receptive language. The majority are nonverbal and communicate by alternate modes.
