Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach science to the English Language Learners at my school. Some of these ELLs have had interrupted education or not enough science preparation when they arrive here. Although I'm passionate about all the cool facts that science can tell us about the world around us, I know that students learn and understand so much more with real-world connections. I have never had such full attention from my class as when I start things off with: "So here's a story about..."
With the right type of classroom library, I can use books to introduce them to 'hidden figures' and important people of color in STEM.
With the right type of library, students can learn more about animals and plants -- the more wild and wacky, the better -- as well as STEM careers that students don't even know exists. Having a basic knowledge of science is necessary in today's complex world, for students to become informed citizens.
There are so many wonderful and amazing things to learn in science that affects our everyday lives. I want to make that information available to them, by helping them to increase their science literacy, with interesting, diverse, engaging literature.
My Project
Students will learn about how science affects our world, the stories behind famous scientists who made a difference and see people like them represented in the books.
Several Spanish books are included for our Entering / Emerging students to increase access for all students to the world of science.
Our students are interested to know more about how and why science impacts our lives every day, but having easy access to books that can provoke their thinking and inspire them to a world outside of the Bronx will make a big difference.
Students have a natural curiosity that they want to be satisfied, and having their own independent access to a science library will enable them to explore that curiosity.
