My Students

I teach middle school and high school English, Mathematics, and PE in a small, rural district. My students are hard workers who need the tools to be more successful.

My students have a wide range of energy levels throughout the day.

I want them to become strong writers, readers and mathematicians, and in order to do so, I need them to be able to concentrate in an environment that is inviting and fits their individual needs in on a daily basis.

My students are particularly interested in seating that allows them to move without distracting others. We need more variety to implement the idea of flexible seating with fidelity.

My Project

I would like to share the story of three women who worked for NASA as mathematicians and helped launch John Glenn into space. The book tells how Dorothy Vaughan, Katherine Johnson, and Mary Jackson faced huge odds to make contributions beyond the Glenn mission, through pure grit, determination, and hard work.

In fact, by reading this book, my students will get to see how these women used their skills to put astronauts into space and that while their work was often hidden — and was different from what society expected of women in general and African-American women in particular — these three women also were part of a centuries long history of women performing complex math computations to further science and later computing.

These three women succeeded and thrived in worlds divided by skin color, gender, education, and intelligence, which is a lesson all students could learn from.
