This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Despite various barriers, my students are open-minded inquirers that want and deserve an excellent education. I teach at a Title I school, where more than 75% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. I am a special education teacher and I teach two levels of a reading and writing course. My students are eager to learn, and truly want to become strong readers and writers, but we do not always have the money for additional resources.

My students are what keep me going every day.

My Project

Beginning in March, I plan on having my Academic Reading and Writing II class read Hidden Figures. I choose this book because we will be able to read a book about math, science, and technology while addressing topics like racism and sexism.

Students deserve the opportunity to access diverse curricula and content.

As stated on GoodReads website, "Moving from World War II through NASA’s golden age, touching on the civil rights era, the Space Race, the Cold War and the women’s rights movement, ‘Hidden Figures’ interweaves a rich history of mankind’s greatest adventure with the intimate stories of five courageous women whose work forever changed the world."

I strongly believe that my students will be able to engage in the content and have strong discussions about society while also seeing the value of STEAM careers.
