My Students

My students are a diverse group of 8th graders who vary in reading levels tremendously. Some are insatiable book worms while others have not had the access, choice, and adult modeling yet to see the value and enjoyment of books. They love books by Jason Reynolds, Gene Luen Yang, and Kazu Kabuishi. They love Spicy Takis any time of day and try to sneak Jolly Ranchers into my classroom.

My Project

This project is to fund high interest, low reading level graphic novels that interest young adults. I have many students who struggle to find a book they feel is mature enough to enjoy and relate to, but low enough for them to comprehend. These graphic novels are the perfect match for many of my struggling readers. Some are graphic novel versions of grade level appropriate novels and will be used to help students of different reading levels discuss and analyze the same text. I have already used graphic novels in my classroom in the past, and the students scoop them up quickly. I love watching them discussing their books and looking at exciting parts together. If you provide funding for this project, my students and I will be grateful.
