Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach sixth and seventh grade special education students. Teaching and facilitating a love for reading in junior high students is a difficult task. Many of my students are reading on a first or second grade level. I also teach in a district where almost 80% of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

I recently discovered the Hi-Lo book series.

These books allow my junior high students who are struggling readers to find resources and materials targeted toward their age range. Many of the books they enjoy reading are geared towards the interests of of a kindergartner and not of a sixth or seventh-grader. However, the hi-lo books offer a variety of literature that appeals to all of my students.

We just finished our fourth series of hi-lo books and my students absolutely loved them! I plan to use book studies to guide my activities and reading as well as cooperative learning where my students will work in groups to collaborate. I also plan to use Think-Pair-Share to differentiate instruction. These books are an extremely valuable and useful tool for my classroom. They provide interesting and engaging literature that has fostered a love for reading in each one of my students.
