Help me give my students ESL materials that make them feel included. Many classroom libraries do not represent all the students in the classroom. Everyone is important and should be celebrated!
I teach at a low-income high-poverty level school. All of the students receive free breakfast and lunch each day. The school serves Kindergarten though Eighth grade, and we have a growing population of English Language Learners. I want my new ESL students to feel included within their classroom community.
Most books within the classroom libraries do not show characters that represent all of the learners in the room.
I believe that everyone is important and deserves to be celebrated. I think that my American students can learn from these materials as well. I would like to be able to acknowledge everyone's cultures and important ideas from their heritage. I feel that adding these materials to my growng ESL library and toolbox can help with these goals.
