A peek inside my classroom would reveal an inclusive environment where all students discover and experience music. I believe all students deserve a high-quality music education; however, it can be a challenge to meet the needs of many students with such a wide range of ability levels and interests.
Every student is highly motivated to sing, dance and play instruments, and through music we learn respect for other cultures and different ways of doing things.
We learn to play together in ensemble. Knowing that all members of the group must work together for the group to succeed, we invest in each other’s success and lift up those who struggle. We learn to sing in languages other than English, and in so doing we listen for different sounds and different ways of expressing thoughts. We learn to compliment one another’s rhythms and melodies on instruments—an essential of good back-and-forth communication. We create movements in small groups to accompany the music we are learning. We sing and play in circles that exemplify our equality and shared community.
My Project
My students need a way to store a classroom set of ukuleles. Along with the storage cases, we need ten ukulele tuners so that all students are able to participate in the tuning process and get to the part of the lesson that everyone loves learning new songs!
With the addition of these ukulele cases and tuners, the instruments will safely stored and will take less time to distribute and tune to maximize our time making music.
When we began playing ukuleles at our school, I had no idea how engaged and motivated our students would be and the joy that would come from adding this little instrument to our classes! We have been playing songs with our new ukuleles at lightning speed. One of the first steps in learning to play a stringed instrument, is learning to tune. In our building, I only see my students 50 minutes every 4 days. I have to make every minute count. These storage cases and ukulele tuners will make a space saving, safe and quick way to distribute our ukuleles and make music. Thanks for taking the time to learn more about our classroom needs!
